MARYVILLE— To assist business owners with the application process for the Business Interruption Grant program, State Senator Christopher Belt (D-Centreville) and State Senator Rachelle Crowe (D-Glen Carbon) are cohosting a free webinar with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for businesses in central and southwestern Illinois on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, which is why I am encouraging local business owners to participate in the BIG webinar this week,” Belt said. “The pandemic was devastating for many businesses, so it’s imperative that they make the most of this opportunity to receive some aid from the second round of the BIG program.”

censuslogoSpringfield – Despite a lower court ruling extending the census deadline, Democratic members of the Illinois Senate are urging residents to complete their census forms as soon as possible. There’s a possibility this decision could be overturned on appeal and this extended window could be cut short.
“While I’m grateful for the court ruling extending the deadline to fill out the census, we can’t become complacent,” said State Sen. Cristina Castro (D-Elgin). “We’ve seen this deadline move several times already. Everyone should complete the census in case it moves again.”
In August, the Census Bureau announced they would end all counting efforts a month earlier than scheduled despite concerns that the pandemic had impeded census outreach efforts. A federal court issued a ruling Thursday ordering the bureau to abandon this last-minute change, but the Justice Department is expected to appeal the decision.
“We need everyone in our communities to be counted,” said State Sen. Christopher Belt (D-Centreville), Chair of the Senate Black Caucus. “Our census numbers will affect federal funding and government representation for the next decade.”

04102019CM1670EAST ST. LOUIS – As many teachers and students adapt to e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, State Senator Christopher Belt (D-Centreville) announced schools in St. Clair and Madison Counties will receive over $2 million to provide the necessary resources to students who lack access to remote learning technology.

“E-learning has been difficult for many students in disadvantaged areas, who might not have access to the internet or a computer,” Belt said. “These grants will support schools’ efforts to make sure every student can actively participate in class, even from outside the classroom.”

The Digital Equity Formula Grant will help ensure students have the technology they need to access robust and equitable learning opportunities this fall. School districts may use the grant to purchase additional devices and connectivity or to cover purchases made since March 13, 2020.

Local school districts receiving funding include:
